I was born in Ipswich but apart from three years when I was first married haven’t lived in the town.

I’ve never moved far away but to me it’s always been a town with a chip on both shoulders. Spike Milligan was one of many comedians who have made fun of the town over the years, all of whom received a very hostile reaction whereas big rival Norwich just 40 miles up the road embraced Alan Partridge and happily shared the joke on the city, a sign of self confidence and not self pity.

A former manager of Ipswich Town football club once claimed that the club was the biggest thing in the town. Sadly, he was only too right but when your eggs are all in one basket things can go horribly wrong, as a look at the current foot of the table in England’s second tier league.
