Not given the wages we were spending and the lack of wealth of the owners

Yo-yo clubs don't yo-yo forever. I think the club have been right to adopt a completely different, long term approach. I'd question its execution, but not the idea itself. It's the only way for these owners and their nephew to remain at the helm.
