the point being though, that if he were to set out on a 30 mile ride, but find that after an hour he was still only about 12 mile into it, then not to get too disappointed by taking a shorter route than originally planned to get back home, in order to do 2 hours of riding instead of feeling that he needs to do the full 30 miles but end up taking nearer to 3 hours - for which he might be less prepared food and drink wise, and end up feeling more demoralised
