My counterargument on this is

that we knew how good they were because they played (and we saw them play) regularly. Ryan Jarvis has been picked for England at youth level consistently so a 'good' coach has seen something there, but he's never played regularly so we'll never know just how good he might be. Playing on the odd occasion is never going to help a player realise his potential, or indeed prove that he's not good enough!
