as the players that are sold had to be bought once. We had league 1 standard players three years ago.

Our net spend in the last three years has had to change a league 1 side into a premier side. Villa, for example, have only had to maintain a mid table premier league side.

You also have to take into account wages, rather than just transfer fees. Again, we are one of the lowest payers in the league.
