Point about 4-4-2 - as we used to play it - was that there was no role for a withdrawn

striker. The two forwards were supposed to be close to each other, so that one could pick up on the knockdowns from the inevitable long balls. Rather than picking it up in midfield from the centre backs and midfielders, which was what Le Tissier used to do.

Not saying the formation was the only problem, but I think it was part of it.
