But in this case was it the fact he is evil that led to the crime or

was it the fact he's a thick, greedy idiot who thought he could get his income levels back up by framing his ex for this fire?

In my view in this particular case there is a clear link between the benefits and the motive for the crime. I don;t think he meant to kill his own children (he by all accounts had a plan to rescue them via a window but drafts through the house spread the fire too quickly) but his own greed/stupidity meant he went ahead and did something unbelievably stupid/reckless which tragically went badly wrong.

Not coming clean afterwards is, however, evil.
