I recommend those ultrasonic cat scarers. I put one in my front garden this summer: most of my grass has grown back and I rarely see a moggy any more. My blackbirds are almost relaxed. Almost: I need to find a magpie deterrent. A deterrent, mind: I'm not prepared to kill them.
