that isn't possible now because (bizarrely) fans have too much influence

in the old days you turned up, supported your team at the game on Saturday and then went away until teh next game when you did the same.

Now, thanks to the internet and 24 hour sports news channels etc fans spend the period in between games going over and over them (often in hetaed fashion) So every feeling (good and bad) gets multiplied and exaggerated and this then affects the mood and atmosphere at the game and often creates a vicious circle, making it impossible for managers to carry out long term plans.

Look at Worthy - his first 3.5 years here were successful and yet after just one bad season (in the Prem) loads of fans wanted him out. So apparently one bad year more than makes up for over 3 good ones. On that basis continuity is imposssible - no-one can be successful every year.
