is pretty vapid in my view

Of course you'd rather have a successful manager that you don't then want to sack. And clubs that are successful tend not to sack their managers in response, and so - hey presto! - you see a positive correlation between how long a manager lasts and how successful a club is.

But that doesn't tell you what to do when you find yourself doing badly, does it?

Should we have given Worthy longer? I certainly didn't think so at the time.

Should we have given Grant longer? I certainly didn't think so at the time.

Should we have given Roeder longer? Well, no club that employs him seems to want to go much past a season. And I don't think West Ham or Newcastle particularly wish they'd stuck with him....
