Forcing players to stay against their will pretty much never works out. As for "he is under contract so we don't have to sell", yes - let's keep him until the end of his contract (because we can, right?) and then he leaves for nothing. The only reason we have this apparently "shameful" situation is because we somehow persuaded them to stay and play brilliantly this season (I didn't expect us to be able to). If it took a 'promise' to do that then frankly it was a fantastic thing to do. If you want players to give 100% for your cause you have to convince them that you will also look out for their interests. No club that stops players moving up to a higher level if they get the chance will pretty quickly not have many decent players.
Football, like society, is not inherently 'fair'. Fans like you who constantly whining and blaming the club for that unfairness are far more shameful than anything the club has done.
