It's a massive sporting spectacle, with a number of different contests going on within it.

Winning a stage is a huge thing - for a lot of the riders even it, even for a lot of the teams, that's what they're aiming at above all else.

Then there's various other contests - was well as each stage being a contest in it's right, there's also King of the Mountains, and the overall sprinters prize (and there's sprints during each stage, as well as at the finish of each one).

Plus there's obviously the yellow jersey for overall winner.

Point is, there's loads more to it than being the overall winner. Is just a different kind of sporting event to those where there's only one competition, I guess. You probably need to watch it for a bit to appreciate it though.
