WH is infinitely preferable to Hardy's 'Return of the Native', trust me.

That was my A-Level nightmare. 650 pages of tedious crap about hills, rain and Wessex festivals. Hardy spent 30 pages near the start establishing Eustacia Vye as the tragic heroine, haunted by the rain and the darkness etc etc, and so I skipped to the end and surprise surprise ...

... she drowns herself! Turn up for the books.

Then we did 'Waiting for Godot' by Samuel Beckett which was incredible. By then, however, Hardy had put me off literature and I'd chosen History on my UCAS form instead. Studying literature (and film) now but Hardy nearly put me off for life. Tosser.
