i'm not sure how i opened my first bank account...

i think my accomodation was arranged before i left england (this was when i was at uni), so i had an address when i first went to the bank. If you can pay a deposit in cash and pay a couple of months in advance, i don't think that landlords will care if you have a bank account or not. Of course you can't expect to find accommodation the day you arrive - it took us about 3 months (to look for a flat, find a flat and then wait for it to become empty) - so you could do this from the UK with a few trips over or (probably easier) come over and stay in a youth hostel whilst searching. A youth hostel or 'foyer' address might even be enough to get you a bank account, come to think of it.....
