Ideally, you would connect both the PC and the xbox to the router - and use DHCP to assign IP addresses to both.

However, if wireless and more wires are not an option: Don't worry about configuring the router if your PC is working. Just reconfigure the PC's network to 'share' it's internet connection.

Go to control panel - network. Right click on the connection your PC is using to connect to the internet (not the one you have plugged into the xbox) and select properties. Go to the advanced tab and enable internet connection sharing. For 'home networking connection' pick the interface used to connect the xbox to the pc.

NOTE: if you just use a cable to connect the PC and xbox together, it must be a 'cross over' cable and not a normal ethernet cable (as there is no router between the two).
