I agree... though for slightly different reasons

If you run down your conventional forces then when things get really hairy you're pushed into threats involving your nuclear capacity.

I'm reasonably assured that the western european nations wouldn't unilaterally use their nuclear weapons but it'd be the ideal excuse for less stable states to get their retaliation in first. Against, Israel probably - killing two birds with one stone.

The whole nuclear deterrent thing just seems like a ridiculous anomaly in 2007.
