Jumpers wont help

That's for much much older motherboards and even then I think that was more for CPU speed than RAM config.

Try:

-Testing the RAM on it's own, if it doesn't work it's obviously a straight compatibility issue with your motherboard
-Updating the bios of your motherboard (read up on this very carefully though)

The problem could also be that the modules are uneven sizes. I think it's dependent on the motherboard but I think some require them to be equal. IMHO the extra 512 RAM isn't going to make that much of a difference if you can just get the new stuff to work on it's own. Obviously more is better but I'm assuming your PC is pretty old anyway and so the rest of your hardware might well act as a bit of a bottleneck
