we were paying them good money to do nothing though

except make a few appearance which in most cases (Charlton/Jarrett/Brennan) were sh*te and did nothing much to help the team. So why not just get backups (who can hardly be worse!) in to cover injuries only when you need them, thus saving all those extra weeks wages?
