That said, McCarthy's use of an admittedly limited budget in the Premiership was shockingly inept, and the horrendously low points total was nothing but the result of the sheer paucity of his tactical imagination.

Even John Gorman's Swindon Town team of 1993-94 - surely the most financially limited, not to mention 'smallest' team ever to play in the top flight - managed thirty points, and Graham Taylor's Watford side in 1999-2000 at least crept up to 24.

To put together a team only capable of one home win all season - and that against a very, very mediocre team who'd only won away once in 18 attempts, in the last home game of the year - is the mark of a manager hideously out of his depth in the top flight. Much like our Nige ...
