The greater evidence is shown in the TV footage, where the ref awards a foul and stands motionless, without giving any indication at all of producing any sort of card.

Then as soon as Rooney pushes Ronaldo, he snaps into action and calls Rooney over.

We will never know but from the evidence of the pictures it looks like the push made up his mind.

You also have to remember that pants will think of any possible reason to say it was the England players' 100% fault rather than any blame lying elsewhere.
