But yeah, I think a lot of the aggro comes back to people assuming that everyone feels the same as them.

Graham Greene had a good take on this in the Quiet American (I think).

Which was that in pre-war Vietnam the vast majority of people were not motivated by the political ideology, they just wanted a quiet and comfortable life.

I think the same is still true.
