This is why England suffered when Hoddle opened his stupid mouth

because hoddle was laying down the foundations of a good England side and set up

He wasn't popular in the slightest for taking Anderton, then Anderton played ok, and even scored an important goal. Owen sprung to life as the young naive striker

Beckham Anderton Scholes, Ince and Batty were a great mix in midfield, a mixture of a attack and tenacious tackling. Things looked right. He even took Ferdinand and said he had no intention of playing him, it was for the future of English football

Beckham got sent off, but England still battled for a well earned draw with Argentina, and even to a point, Campbell had a decent goal disallowed

Basically Hoddle was the first manager in my lifetime that looked to be doing all the right things, but he opened his mouth and left.

In came Keegan and inexperience and pressure got the better of him, and England were struggling until Erikson came along, a coach that can qualify but not perform at big tournaments
