It cannot have always been easy for him growing up. He would have known that his natural father abandoned him before birth, his mum married his stepfather while pregnant, and then he also seems to have abandoned him or been pushed away (e don't know the reasons of course, but it does state he had no contact after they left the USA).

And then when his mum and he returned to Germany, his mum couldn't cope with raising him as a single parent and so he was essentially raised by his grandmother.

That's a tough upbringing to overcome and do so well for himself, and not something he seems to advertise - it's only to be found in a few in depth interviews over the years and never seems to show any bitterness either.
