I’d be very surprised if it isn’t his step dad’s surname

But it’s possible it isn’t. In any case, I think that’s a red herring. He grew up in Germany, speaks German as his mother tongue, can’t see him pronouncing a German surname anything other than the German way.

But I’m always wrong, so put him down as the American way!
