Maybe it was the way the season has been framed

That last time we invested nothing, but this time, we’re going for it. We’ll be spending big money, and rolling into battle with a variety of weaponry. (Appreciate that these analogies are pretty out of order given current events, but that was the language we used during happier times.)

I think we all therefore had our expectations lifted up quite a lot. I don’t (of course) mean that any of us expected us to go toe to toe with the mega clubs. But I think the expectation was that we would see a Prem ready team slugging it out with lots of other clubs. Able to pick up points anywhere, stay in games, see out tight wins. No, we wouldn’t take 17th now if it was offered. We’re aiming higher than that.

Maybe we would all be more forgiving if this had come with a dose of, 17th will still be an incredible achievement. And a bit of, the club is still on a journey, we’re trying to get better and closer every time we do this. Yes, we’re giving it everything to stay up, but we have one eye on making sure we continue to progress even if we go down.

The club haven’t done themselves any favours with the public presentation of what this season was supposed to be about, versus the reality on the pitch.
