As someone with a background in mathematics and physics, I find it frustrating.

It's only needed when you write out expressions with ambiguity; you would never actually find a mathematician us BODMAS, BIDMAS or PEMDAS* because they always write out expressions that have no ambiguity!

*the only time you might find them using it is if they are teaching at school; and that seems to be the only reason it exists: to be a thing taught at school. And never to be used again if you become a mathematician, physicist or engineer.
