There’s the story about Robert Maxwell (think Mike Ashley but worse)…

One day he got in the lift at his headquarters (Maxwell House) and there was a scruffy lad in it wearing jeans. Maxwell asked him how much he earned in a week and the lad told him. Maxwell opened his wallet and paid him two months wages and said “when you’ve finished what you are doing go to personnel and tell them that I’ve fired you and you are to leave today. The lift then arrived at Maxwell’s floor and as he left the Lad said “OK mate, thanks but I’m a courier I don’t actually work here!”
