I would definitely prefer closed borders + opt for the New Zealand approach.

I think what is going on at the moment is that the UK variant is out-competing the novel SA/Brazil/India variants. The vaccines companies are creating updated vaccines that give multi-variant protection. I assume they are running trials in India / Brazil which will conclude relatively soon due to the appalling situation in those countries. The key data that sage will be looking for from India is to what extent the AZ vaccine protects against the India strain. Only ten percent of the population have been vaccinated but that is still ~130 million people so might be able to get some solid stats from there.
