I suppose you need to ask yourself what you want to get back from your job

Since you mention an interest in NVQs, I assume you mean some kind of formal qualification in some way related to the job at hand. Or do you just want to exercise your brain?

If the latter then maybe you should just look for an interesting evening course at the local FE college (if they still call them that) - a couple of mates of mine did a literature course years ago (maybe an A level), just for the interest more than anything else.

If the former then I guess the NVQ is the way to go, although I know nothing about such things or how useful or otherwise they are. I suspect they'd be a doddle for you though.
