Its a bit of a kick and rush formation isn;t it and
to a degree it suits our strengths because our strengths are Kane and having two quick, wide forwards in Sterling and Sancho/Rashford.
However its a pretty basic/naïve set up if you ask me, Essentially England's tactics under Southgate currently are give it to the quick guys. there is nothing sophisticated about it and no evidence of any great coaching. And we know that when we play teams with technical midfields who keep the ball well we will be starved of possession and end up playing almost entirely on the counter attack. We can do that but I don't see us winning a tournament doing it. As I said last night I think he only really has one mission between now and next summer (other than the foregone conclusion that is qualifying) and that's to find a midfield balance which enables us to control games better and retain possession. He is failing to do that and snubbing Maddison will not help him.
If you think about it its a pretty deliberate snub by Southgate. In the last 2 years he has called up Hudson Odoi, Sancho, Mount and Maddison. The former two got starts or sub appearances in the first possible game. Mount came on twice this week. In 4 possible games Maddison has not been given a minute and the substitution last night was basically a massive f**k you to him. He could have brought one of them (i.e. him and Mount) on in each game, both get a cap and a bit of experience and its job done but he chose not to do that.
I spoke to a mate of mine in the media and asked why they media are not taking Southgate to task over this. He didn't know but did say he think madders is a bit too cocky. I don't think that justifies treating him like this but perhaps Southgate feels he is teaching him a lesson of some sort.
