i blame the county council

since they've stopped cutting back roadside verges the insect population appears to have shot up (i've not finished counting them all yet as have been busy re-lining my pond) anyway that's my theory and no doubt it's possibly someone else's as well. so well done county council, through being utter tightwads you have inadvertently improved the ecology. viva la austerity.
