It would be unlikely to be self defence if proven that it was premeditated

If he ran to the kitchen got attacked and killed someone with a bent spoon then maybe self defence.

But if he ran to a cupboard picked up a butterfly knife and slit the burglars throat I think the court would look differently at it.

Dunno though just thinking aloud.
