The "why don't you ignore it" argument/statement.. ...

Not necessarily in relation to the original post here or usa, but in general - lots of people did ignore racism, sexism, homophobia, abuse, etc because the law, work policies etc did not assist someone saying something in response and it was socially tolerated as just one of those things, or he/she's just like that don't pay any attention. This then can confirm, in the mind of the person saying it, their views are valid/right because if not they would have been challenged.

People are generally now more confident in saying no, I don't find that acceptable - knowing legislation etc, supports their right to do so.

Many of us would have watched Norwich in the 70's and 80's when the National Front were there - horrific racist chants and comments shouted out and it seemed an acceptable part of the game.

So I for one am glad that whilst there is still a platform for people to spout vile views - the same medium gives the right of reply and those views can have the spotlight but on them and the individual making them. Of course, once challenged it always turns out to be banter or a weakness of the person challenging that opinion doesn't it...
