but it is a risk factor that makes the injury more likely to occur. Just like you can never prove that smoking directly caused lung cancer in any individual case. So I don't think it's correct that you said this kind of injury is as likely to occur in the first game as in the last game of the season. Fatigue is a risk factor which makes it more likely - and that is going to be more prevalent towards the end of a season in players who have played a lot and whose bodies are on the verge of breaking down.

And Maddison must be fatigued, having played so much at his age, and getting kicked to pieces in most games. Obviously still unlucky to get injured, but perhaps his workload could have been managed better. His form has dropped off in the last few weeks as well, which also suggests he could be a bit burnt out.
