that's not really true

there have been several studies citing fatigue as a risk factor for joint injuries. Basically tired, or poorly recovered muscles (mainly hamstrings and quads) don't provide as much stability to the joint.

Of course, it is still bad luck and an element of chance. But there is certainly evidence that fatigue and 'wear and tear' can play a role in these kind of injuries.
