That goes back to my point that it's hard for a leader to become PM unless they are acceptable to the right-wing news media. Blair for example was well-in with Murdoch.

The Tories are reliant upon traditional news media to help promote their right-wing propaganda. The rise of social media is a threat to the traditional news media business model and so the Tories.
