0.6mm wire should be fine, you want the steel to be bright so clean off the rust and paint etc. you want to weld the bead towards you or downwards if it is vertical. Don't have it too hot for thin metal or it will burn a hole through the sheet. If you've got some old scrap to practice on first you will soon get the hang of it.
