Hi, I'm thinking of doing some welding anyone got any hot tips or shortcuts?

Just the basics please like what sort of weldering mochine is the best to rent and are those big masks really necessary or will doubling up on sunglasses fit the bill for some home weldering fun? It's not a major project I'm doing so I don't need all the bullschitt technical gubbins like what they do on the youtree tutorials. thanks GUYS.
