we are signing a bunch of German lower league players, some not that young, and we are heaping expectations on them.

For me, this is more similar to the start of the Lambert era. If Farke and Webber are doing a great job, some of these guys will succeed and become absolute bargains (and ultimately get sold on), but some of them will also fail. Therefore I am happy that we are signing in numbers to reduce the risk of not finding a decent CB among them for example, but we should understand that they are not all going to be Philipp Lahm Mk.2
