Very much off topic but I want to tell you a little bit about C

She died yesterday. She had just turned 60 and had been married to my wife’s sister for nearly 10 years. They met on a gay Christian retreat in one of the Hebridean holy isles.

She was a remarkable woman. A doctor and a recovering alcoholic; a militant Socialist; a militant Scottish Nationalist; a Christian who practised the faith with her wife by the two of them filling their home with refugees and people in need. (And cats!) She was complicated and kind, spikey and affectionate and I loved her greatly. She has gone too soon.

Her last 3 months have been dreadful, riddled with cancer and racked with pain which nothing – not methadone, not ketamine, not anaesthetic injected directly into her nerves – could calm. She had a massive stroke last week and couldn’t speak any more. But she died well and at peace, as a Hebridean blessing was spoken over her and Mozart was sung to her by a friend.

I am very sad and things feel unfair. But chin up, suck it up and on we go.

I'm not going to drip on about it but did just want to say something. Back later.
