it is possible that he was partly brought in with an eye to a future situation when the 'old guard' (largely Hughton-era and before) would finally be gone and we would put our faith in a more youth-based approach.
The promotion two years probably delayed that time (doubt we actually expected to get promoted that season when we appointed him) but it is nearly upon us now.
