I don't think anyone thinks nothing needs to change

Immigration is an issue that needs attention , but there also needs to be more differentiation in public discussion between EU migration and illegal non-EU immigration (Sky News has done a majestic - surely deliberate - job of intertwining these in recent months).
The effects of EU immigration is a huge challenge to be dealt with (which isn't the same as stopped or even necessarily reduced) by the government. But we're Britain and have a good record for flexibility and meeting challenges like this. Look at the explosion in population initiated by the industrial revolution (a far greater disruption to society than we are currently experiencing). Adapting to it rather than retreating helped us become the most powerful country in the world.
Of course we didn't have democracy then - no-one asked the people if they wanted that change...
