Architects, generally, love their own way and working on high profile stuff. Extensions can be mundane to them. They (again, massive generalisations here but for a reason) can sometimes just ping out an off the shelf extension design which is easy for them but might not be ideal for you.

You need to know exactly what you want the built space to do for you, and chatting to the council will help form up your requirements, giving you a better brief when talking with architects. I can't really recommend an architect, I deal with them on commercial projects rather than domestic stuff, but will hopefully be building an extension on our gaff next year so am trying to find some decent lads and lasses myself.
