ie - weight gain (or loss) - calories in minus calories out.

(fwiw, I remember hearing some expert bod on the radio a while back saying that when it comes to tackling childhood obesity, it's first order *all* about tackling diet. All this stuff about encouraging exercise as a remedy is just wishful thinking. That's because you're just not gonna get them to do enough exercise to burn up the calories many are currently eating, unless you send them to army boot camp non-stop or something.)
