He ignored the general point, treated it as a personal issue and called him a "wazzock".

Which hardly makes him seem less posh, does it?

He could have corrected Bryant and if he thought he was wrong generally could have explained why he thought so, but instead thought the best policy would be to get playground on him and assume all that was being discussed was him. I wouldn't want to generalise about people who do that though.
