it's also not really a big risk because even if it goes badly wrong, we are very unlikely to be relegated and will just be able to bring in someone new in the summer.

In these circumstances it seems less of a risk to appoint a young manager with a good track record, than some big name that hasn't done anything of note (e.g. Sherwood) and probably has less potential. It's basically a five month period where we can afford to gamble because the worst that can happen is that we will stay in the division; Neil seems like the right kind of gamble to me.
