I agree, but i think the whole 'issue' is that it's not clear how much more expensive they
are. I am fairly certain there is not a weight on the pre-packed banana packet and also how much do 5 bananas weigh anyway. It's a bit like saying how long is a piece of string.
Even if there was just something simple like typical weight between 0.8kg - 0.9kg or something. It would therefore be fairly obvious to most but the eternally dim that ?1 for at most 0.9kg of bananas is more expensive than 1kg of bananas for ?0.68.
A look on Asda's website shows that the loose bananas are sold by weight and the pre-packed sold by pack price and also advertised at cost per unit (banana).
While 20p per banana may not seem a lot, the pre-packed bananas are generally smaller than their loose counterparts. 5 losose bananas may cost 70p for example, but they'll be bigger. As was shown with the video in my op, the pre-packed bananas were almost twice as expensive as the loose ones.
If it was this clear, say for example 5 bananas for ?1 (pre-packed) for 'convenience' or you can get an average of 9 of our loose bananas for ?1. And this was advertised on the shelf next to the pre-packed bananas, (don't forget we are in the same store here), how many people would still buy the pre-packed bananas?
Also keep in mind that neither of these bananas are on a special offer and neither are labled as fairtrade or organic.
The thing with your example of the cans of coke is all cans of coke are the same size. If it is the same brand, same size cans, it is easy to make an informed which ones are the cheapest.
