Roeder had money but decided to spend it on loan fees

this was made clear at the time as club policy as he thought he was getting in better quality. The problem was that we didn't really have any valuable players to sell when we went down, a policy that could have seen the club stuck in League One for a long time. Roeder bought one of our greatest ever players and decided not to play him and did the same to one he inherited. We got lucky with the Lambert appointment and Gunn buying Holt. Lambert was a manager who had experienced in all the lower divisions and therefore knew some bargains and players who were hungry for success and like him had plenty to prove.
