In light of the recent news stories have been reading a bit about this Scottish referendum
Frankly I find it utterly staggering that we have managed (almost it seems without realising because I think everyone was so complacent about the outcome) to allow ourselves to be on the brink of a vote of such absolutely enormous constitutional importance (from which there will no doubt be no turning back) based on so little evidence or information about how the hell it will actually work if Scotland votes yes and what the knock on effects will be.
Its a bit frightening if you ask me. Alex Salmond seems to be running around with his "white paper" which appears to be 90% fantasy (a sort of pick and mix of the kind of things he would like to keep/have without even though its not his decision), stirring up public sentiment and our bunch of hapless idiot politicians seem to be aiding his cause more than resisting it. Now we have the embarrassing spectre of our politicians trying to bribe the already heavily subsidised Scots with even more goodies so they don't vote to break away thus no doubt stirring up English resentment.
I have nothing in principle against the Scots having a vote over independence and frankly if they want to go it alone then so be it but at least lets do it on a properly informed basis in terms of what it means for both side of the border. The level of debate has been appalling and the whole thing is starting to smack of an almighty shambles as panic sets in that they may actually vote yes.
