I would say there is a bit of a difference between appointing

a current player who has been at the club for a long time and is well acquainted with the very specific system that the team plays.

And appointing a youth team coach that retired 15 years ago, still hasn't completed the highest level coaching badges, and has no managerial experience, of a club that has no real stylistic identity.
